Biarum ditschianum

£15.00

Biarum ditschianum is perhaps the strangest of all the Biarum species. Described to science in the late 1980’s, it is found in just one location from Turkey.

Typically flowering in June or July, the inflorescence is small and held at ground level. The spathe is very short indeed and encloses a remarkable, bright yellow and grossly swollen spadix.

Description

Biarum ditschianum is perhaps the strangest of all the Biarum species. Described to science in the late 1980’s, it is found in just one location from Turkey.

Typically flowering in June or July, the inflorescence is small and held at ground level. The spathe is very short indeed and encloses a remarkable, bright yellow and grossly swollen spadix.

Foliage is typical for Biarum being spear shaped and pale green.

Plant tubers around 4 inches deep in a fertile and loamy mix. Add plenty of drainage using sharp sand and horticultural grit. Top dress the pots with a couple of cm of grit. After planting, water once, and wait until the shoot appears before gradually increasing watering levels. This is a winter growing species (ie, it grows on a typical Mediterranean bulb cycle) and requires frost free conditions and bright light.
