Description
1x seed packet containing 10x Albuca bracteata seeds.
Albuca bracteata (Syn. Ornithogalum longebracteatum and Ornithogalum caudatum) often goes by the common name Pregnant Onion or Sea Onion. It is a bulbous species from South and East Africa, typically found growing on semi-shaded areas at the edges of forests. Growing to a maximum height of around 90cm, it makes large and swollen bulbs, the top half of which emerge from the ground. The flower spikes contain many individual flowers, each coloured white and green.
Despite its African origins, Albuca bracteata is relatively hardy in the UK, especially when planted in a very sharply drained compost mix in a pot or trough. It might be wise to offer protection from winter rains and freezing conditions. Certainly, it has proved itself to be trouble free under glass. Alternatively, it can make an interesting windowsill plant.
In times of drought or stress, it will lose its leaves, regrowing again from the bulb under more favourable conditions.
Sow into a good quality compost mix with good drainage.
