Description
Amorphophallus operculatus was described to science in 2003 after being discovered in Thailand. It is my favourite Amorphophallus purely due to the fabulous leaves – these are held on purple petiole and are a superb velvety green with a purple trim along the edges.
Tubers are long and slender vertical rhizomes, rather like a pale and thin carrot. These can become very long indeed and some ingenuity will be required to accommodate them in pots. Modified drain pipes have been used!
Inflorescences are white with a long cream spadix.
Only one tuber for sale this year, which has taken several years to reach this size. I am unsure at what size this species flowers, but this tuber will go on to make a fantastic leaf. Tubers seem prone to rot, so please ensure this is grown in a very free draining compost mix.
