Arisaema costatum CC3453

£3.00

Price per 1x tuber.

These are young tubers of Arisaema costatum raised from seed collected on one of Chris Chadwell’s plant expeditions. They carry the collection number CC3453.

The tubers offered are offset tubers, but will sprout this year. Diameter of the tubers is between 1cm – 2cm, so they are still small. They will need growing on before reaching flowering size, however, Arisaema costatum is an easy species and tubers do seem to bulk up relatively quickly. A lovely garden plant, but as these are small material, it is worth growing them on in a pot for a year or two before planting out. Grow in light shade in a well drained but moist location.

Arisaema costatum is one of our favourite Arisaema and is an excellent choice for any garden, proving hardy here even in unimproved heavy ‘Devon Red’ clay soil. Appearing in late Spring or early Summer, the single trifoliolate leaf is large and glossy with attractive veining. The spathe is brightly coloured, and even though it is held beneath the leaves, stands out and demands closer inspection.

The spathes have white stripes that contrast brilliantly with the maroon background, and the spadix appendage trails away in a twisted and tortuous fashion, often ending up in a coiled bunch at the base of the plant.
