A superb plant and an absolute favourite here. Colocasia gaoligongensis might be a mouthful to pronounce, but is an excellent Colocasia species for permanent outdoors planting in the UK. Provided that the tubers are given a thick mulch they have proven surprisingly hardy and came through -9 during unscathed during December 2010.
Deciduous in habit when grown outside in the UK, although under frost free conditions they will simply continue to grow and behave as an evergreen plant. Colocasia gaoligongensis reproduces readily via long stolons. Leaves can reach to around 2 feet or so in length and flowers are produced quite freely, adding the charm and beauty of this wonderful plant.
For best results plant in a rich organic compost in light shade. Full sun is also tolerated, although the leaves will be smaller. A moist soil will give the most dramatic and lush results.
