Cyathea cooperi growing in a 2 litre pot.
Cyathea cooperi (correctly called Sphaeropteris cooperi these days!) is the most commonly grown Cyathea species. Easily grown, providing it is given a semi-shaded position and regular watering. Capable of rapid growth, and over time will make impressively large and beautiful fronds and develop of tall thin trunk.
I have read numerous reports of Cyathea cooperi growing outside as a permanent planting, however, only in very sheltered locations and with winter proction in colder areas. For us here in Exmouth, it behaves deciduously when planted out and loses it’s leaves during the winter, before regrowing them during the spring and summer in a continuous succession. However, this cannot be regarded as a frost hardy plant and will need some winter cover or protection in all but the warmest of gardens. We have found it ok under cold glass with careful watering.
Such an impressive fern is always worth the slight effort in growing, and we would not be without this in the garden here!
