Description
Dendrobium kingianum growing in a 9cm pot.
Dendrobium kingianum is an Australian orchid that has proved to be much hardier than is often quoted. It perfoms well here in Devon in a mild corner of the garden with overhead cover, growing in the trunk of a Dicksonia tree fern. Whilst it has certainly seen frost, any cold tempertures will be relatively fleeting in this location, so I am unsure if it’s exact level of cold tolerance. It seems unphased in a cold greenhouse when kept on the dry side.
A cold period is actually required to promote flowering, and flowering occurs late winter.
An interesting little orchid that should be more widely grown.
