Dichelostemma ida-maia, the Firecracker Plant, is a hardy bulb from Northern California and Oregon, where is grows in along forest margins and clearings. Growing from a small corm / bulb, thin stems carry a very bright and showy umbel of cylindrical flowers, each of which is a striking pinky red colour with upturned ends encasing white flowering parts. Flowering occurs from May – July.
Easily grown. Dichelostemma ida-maia prefers a warm sunny position with good drainage. It does enjoy a dryish summer rest after flowering, hence the need for drainage.
