Description
1x seed packet containing 5x Dracunculus canariensis seeds.
An exceptionally beautiful species from the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and El Heirro. This is now a rare plant in the wild, and we are pleased to be able to offer seed from cultivated plants.
Unlike its more commonly available relative, Dracunculus vulgaris, this superb plant thankfully lacks the unpleasant ‘scent’, instead smelling strongly of fruit rather than rotten meat… Spathes and spadix’s are pure white.
Unfortunately, Dracunculus canariensis is not quite hardy outdoors in the UK, unless in very specific microclimates and with perfect drainage. Pot culture in a cool greenhouse is ideal. Growth typically starts during late Autumn or early winter with the plant going dormant again by late summer. However, with careful management, it has proved possible to phase growth so that it grows during the spring and summer months.
Soak seed for 24 hours before sowing into a good quality seed compost. Germination can take 4-8 weeks, or sometimes a little longer.
