Description

Price per 1x dormant Dracunculus vulgaris tuber. These are large and flowering size.

This hardy species is one of two in the Dracunculus genus. Despite being an eye-catching plant and a bit of a talking point when in flower, it is not as widely grown as it should be.

The first architectural leaves will appear in Spring, eventually followed by the large, deep red spathes that can reach around a metre in length. Could this be the largest flower that can be grown outside in the UK?! Best planted in a sheltered position in a very rich soil. The plants may need staking when in bud or flower as they become top heavy, or planted among other plants which can give a little support.

Although the spathes give out a strong odour, this is short lived – 24 – 48 hours. Dracunculus vulgaris is not a plant for the front of a border, the potential height being around 5 feet in old specimens. After flowering, keep well watered and well fed as these are greedy plants. The rewards will be an even greater show the following year.
