Description
Echium wildpretii growing in a 9cm pot.
Echium wildpretii, the ‘Teide Echium’ or ‘Tower of Jewels’, has been described as one of the wonders of the world! A truly spectacular plant that is found mainly in Caldera around Mount Teide on Tenerife.
Making a dense rosette of silvery leaves, the 2 meter tall flower spike is covered in tiny but bright red flowers, and is absolutely stunning!
Given the high altitude of its habitat, it is very hardy to cold, however, it resents winter wet and so can be tricky in the UK climate. However, with careful siting it is perfectly possible to grow. Alternatively, it can be kept under glass with good air circulation.
Plant in a hot and sheltered position with excellent drainage. Try to avoid a position where it will receive too much winter rainfall. Despite all of it’s needs, it is not too difficult a plant and one that is well worth growing.
