This is an absolute one-off and unique plant. From a batch of 10 seeds sown a number of years ago, just 3 seeds sprouted. All three gernminations went on to produce a tap root, but only one made a leaf. That plant sold very quickly! After a few years a second plant went on to develop a leaf, which is the plant offered here. Amazingly, it is a variegated plant! This variegation has been totally stable for every leaf this plant has ever produced. Leaflets are pattened with pale green / yellow markings. Any Encephalartos species is a rarity, especially in the UK. To have a plant showing such variegation is a most unusual event. The third and final germinated seed still has it’s tap root but no leaves!
Encephalartos villosus is a South African species that grows along the border with Eswatini. As with virtually all Encephalartos species, they are highly valued plants and much sought after by collectors. Pretty much any Encephalartos is difficult to obtain in the UK, especially since Brexit.
Grow in an extremely free draining, largely inorganic mix. Water sparingly, especially in the winter months. Frost tender.
