Description
1 x Euphorbia stygiana ssp santa maria well established in a 1 litre pot.
Euphorbia stygiana ssp santa maria is found only on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores. It is critically endangered in the wild with only a small number of plants surviving in remote areas. Thankfully, plants have been established in cultivation in recent years and its survival seems guaranteed as a garden plant at least.
Euphorbia stygiana ssp santa maria is remarkable in that it makes a very tall 30ft tree in dense forest in the wild – an incredible height! As a garden plant, it doesnt seem to make anywhere near this size, but will develop into an attractive multi-headed shrub. It can be grown in sun or shade, although plants will likely get bigger in a shaded position.
This is a lovely plant that really should be widely grown. It has proven itself hardy in the UK, and in growing it, you’ll be helping to keep this rare species alive!
