Ledebouria socialis ‘Violacea’ growing in a 9cm pot.
Ledebouria socialis is an extremely popular and widely grown plant amongst succulent growers. It is a small bulbous plant that is perfectly suited to pot cultivation.
Found in the wild in evergreen shaded woodlands in well drained soils in an area between the Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa, Ledebouria socialis is commonly known as ‘Silver Squill’ or ‘Wood Hyacinth’. It is closely related to the genus Scilla.
Easily grown in a well drained sandy / gravely compost mix. The neck of the bulb should sit protruding from the soil surface. Leaves are silvery green with dark spots on the upper surface, and have a maroonish colouration underneath. This species reproduces readily by making offsets attached to the main bulb, and a decent clump can be achieved in a relatively short space of time.
Beautiful and great fun to grow. Well suited for a windowsill or greenhouse. Keep virtually dry during the winter months and frost free.
