As the name suggests, Solanum pyracanthos, sometimes called the Porcupine tomato, is a seriously spikey character! Both its stems and leaves are covered with remarkable bright orange thorns. This is an evergreen member of the Tomato family from Madagascar, and although it is not hardy, it’s great fun to grow.
It should be stressed that all parts of this plant are poisonous, so don’t go eating the small yellow Tomato type fruits!
This species is often sold under the incorrect names of Solanum pyracanthum or Solanum pyracanthon.
