Alocasia are large tropical Aroids, grown mainly for their impressive foliage. Leaves of some species are enormous and must surely be amongst the most impressive of all tropical foliage plants.

They tend to form a thick rhizomateous trunk from which the leaves are produced. Flowers are generally insignificant in the form of green or cream spathes.

Despite the genus being large, there are actually very few species suited to growth within the UK due to their love of year round warmth. However, a few are tolerant of cooler conditions although all will need overwintering frost free.
