Bilbergia nutans is a bromeliad originating from South America, and is of particular interest to UK gardeners as it is one of the hardiest bromeliad species.
This has overwintered for many years here in an unheated greenhouse and can also thrive permanently planted outdoors in a sheltered location.
Bilbergia nutans makes rosettes of firm strap-shaped leaves. Remarkable flowers hang down in clusters with shades of purple, green, yellow and pink. A fantastic exotic looking plant!
Plant in a sheltered spot, either in the ground in a well drained fairly dry position with some overhead cover. Alternatively, it is possible to establish this plant as an epiphyte. For example, Bilbergia looks superb growing from the trunk of Trachycarpus fortunei, the Chusan Palm!
Supplied established in 9cm pots.
