Description
Lachenalia bulbifera is a bulbous plant that originates from the Cape of South Africa. Bearing spikes of tubular pink flowers above the slightly leathery and succulent leaves, it is a beautiful and easy plant.
The name ‘bulbifera’ refers to the small leaf bulbils produced in abundance along the base of each leaf. These can be removed and grown on as the plant enters its annual dormancy. I have heard reports that this species is potentially hardy in the mildest parts of the UK, but it perhaps best grown under cool glass or on a windowsill. Growth tends to start during the Autumn, and flowering occurs mid winter.
Available as a dormant flowering sized tuber or as a packet of leaf bulbils. A rewarding and easy plant.
