Description

Price per 1x Brassaiopsis hispida fresh berry, straight off the plant. Each berry usually contains 2x seeds.

Brassaiopsis hispida is a fantastic plant, and like all other members of the genus, is highly sought after. A member of the Araliaceae family (it is related to Schefflera, Fatsia, Aralia etc).

Making spiny stems and large evergreen palmate leaves, Brassaiopsis hispida is a dramatic plant. It adds are a real statement to an exotic planting scheme. The flowers are produced rather late in the season (autumn) and are very similar to typical Ivy flowers. The flowers are potentially self fertile, but we’ve found that seed set tends to be very poor unless the flowers are pollinated by hand. If successful, black berries are formed which may not be fully ripe until the following spring.

This species has been hardy for us here in Devon for around 4 years now. But it can get wind scorch to the leaves in cold easterly winds, and would be considered half hardy in most parts of the country. Best grown in light / dappled shade.

Each berry tends to contain 2 seeds. These have a fairly short viability and are best sown fresh. We therefore send seeds still inside the berry.

Carefully remove the seeds from the berry, and sow into a good quality seed compost. We use a heated propagator that gives gentle bottom heat and get good results. Germination usually occurs between 3-6 weeks.
