Description
Eucomis is a genus of bulbous plants from South Africa. Their common name ‘Pineapple Lily’ refers to the tuft of leaves held on top of the flower spike, giving the appearance of a pineapple top.
Eucomis comosa is a superb species, and numerous colourful cultivars are now in circulation, with ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ one of the best. The glossy burgundy strap leaves emerge in late spring or early summer followed by their remarkable flower. Even when not flowering, the foliage is worth a spot in the garden in its own right. A fantastic plant!
Despite their rather exotic appearance, Eucomis are in fact very easy to grow, and are equally at home in a pot or in the ground. When pot grown, it can be wise to move them into a sheltered area during the winter and to repot once very few years. Grow in regular potting compost in a sunny spot.
Flowering sized bulbs offered.
