Description
1x seed packet containing 20 seeds of Leucocasia gigantea (previously known as Colocasia gigantea).
Leucocasia gigantea, commonly known as the Giant Taro or Giant Colocasia, used to be known by the old scientific name Colocasia gigantea. It makes exceptionally large leaves and is a rapid grower, capable of making large plants in a single season, even under typical UK growing conditions!
Originally from parts of South East Asia, Leucocasia gigantea is now widely grown and can be found throughout the tropics and in many warm temperate areas due to it’s impressive stature and value as a horticultural plant.
We have grown literally hundreds of these plants from seed. The seeds are naturally very small indeed. Due to their tiny size, it is best to sow these directly onto moistened compost. Keep warm (a heated propagator is required – we use a Dewpoint propagator) and moist until germination occurs. Once the seedlings are large enough to be safely handled, transplant into individual pots.
Leucocasia gigantea hates cold conditions, and can be a very difficult plant to overwinter in the UK. It needs frost free conditions and good light levels to survive. However, it is certainly not impossible, and well worth a try. In any case, the seeds are easy to germinate and large plants are acheived in just a few months making it an excellent choice for summer bedding for a tropical style border in a sheltered position.
