Description

1x Begonia grandis ssp.evansiana plant growing in a 9cm pot.

This particular form has dark red undersides to the foliage and white flowers – it probably has a cultivar name, but I don’t know what it is!

Begonia grandis ssp.evansiana is one of the hardiest Begonia species and has proven perfectly hardy in the UK. It thrives in a either a full sun or shaded position, provided that it gets a bit of moisture at the roots and the ground does not become waterlogged during the winter.

Plants are rather late to start into growth each year, often not showing until late May or June, and reach around 40cm by late summer. Leaves are green on the upper surface and flushed red underneath with prominent veining. Easily propagated by tiny bulbils that are produced on the leaf axils along the stem. These ripen during the summer before falling to the ground as the plant dies back, where they can sprout during the following spring.
