Description

1x Musa chunii growing in a 2litre pot.

A rarely cultivated species of banana. Musa chunii can be found in Western Yunnan, China, through to Arunachal pradesh in India. Coming from mountainous areas of cloud forest, it can tolerate cooler temperatures than many species of banana, and hence can be considered a candidate for summer planting in the UK.

Only reaching around 2m in height, the leaves are a vibrant green with feint bronze midrib. Flowers are a bright purple / pink colour. This is a naturally suckering species and will make numerous stems.

This is a tender species and will need overwintering frost free. It came through the winter of 2021/22 in an unheated greenhouse with no issues (kept virtually dry). Optimal growing temperatures appear to be in the mid 20’s degree C.

Not many are growing this species, so why not be one of the first and give it a go?
