Sonchus congestus is a rare plant that is endemic to the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It can be found growing in the typically forested areas around the North of the islands. Ultimately reaching a height of around 1.5 metres, the stems carry heads of impressive lanceolate and lobed leaves, much like an oversized dandilion. Clusters of bright yellow flowers are produced in late summer.
Sonchus congestus is an impressive statement plant. Although tender, it is easily overwintered under cool but frost free conditions and can either be bedded out for the summer months, or cultivated in a pot.
Sow these Sonchus congestus seeds in a good quality seed compost at around 15 – 20 degrees C.
