Description

1x seed packet – 10x Brugmansia sanguinea ‘Hot Red’ Seeds.

Brugmansia sanguinea is a good candidate for growing in the UK, being more cool-tolerant than many of the Brugmansia’s. From reasonably high altitudes in the Andes, this species actually flowers best with summer temperatures around 20 degrees. Perfect for the UK!

Brugmansia sanguinea ‘Hot Red’ makes long trumpet shaped flowers with a strong reddish colouration. These are produced in abundance on mature plants (please note – the flower colour is much redder than the plant shown in our photo, which is more typical of a standard form of this species).

Whilst Brugmansia sanguinea can be grown in the mildest locations outdoors in South West UK, it will need overwintering in a greenhouse or conservatory for the winter months and will take temperatures down to around zero, providing these are not too prolonged.

The seeds are held inside rather unusual corky seed coats. Soak these for 24 hours and press onto the surface of a good quality seed compost. The seeds need light to aid germination, so do not cover. Germination is reliable and can typically take 1-2 months.

Sow the seeds on the surface of a well drained compost. When larger, plants can be planted outdoors in a very well drained gritty or gravelly soil in full sun. Although this species is very cold hardy, it is well recommended to place a rain cover over the plant during the winter months. Excessive moisture or snow freezing in the crown can sometimes cause problems.
